Our Coastal Cottage was a dream we conceived many years ago when we purchased our quaint 1930’s Worker’s Cottage in Burleigh Heads. The home was originally positioned on Burleigh Hill and relocated down to Acanthus Ave in the late 1960’s. The home was certainly in need of some love and care, and we decided to take on the incredible challenge of re-designing and extending this small space.  Our vision was to renovate the home to suit the needs of our growing family but remain true to the heritage of this almost 100-year-old home.

As a Builder and Interior Designer duo we knew we could create something special and unique that captures the essence of coastal living, that pays homage to the beautiful Burleigh area. Materials used such as Linea board cladding, bunker lighting, brass fixtures, timber flooring, organic bluestone steppers and coastal natives encapsulates the coastal environment that surrounds it.

With the heritage of our Coastal Worker’s Cottage, we knew we wanted to maintain the character and original footprint of the home. Working with our talented colleague Stuart Osman, we were able to reach a solution on how to integrate the old with the new, again ensuring that the ‘Coastal Cottage’ aesthetic was maintained. An example of this is the step down into the extended part of the home, where the floor changes from natural oak timber to a more modern polished concrete finish. Our brick fireplace, and archway were two of our favourite features we knew we wanted to keep and showcase. To reflect the design of the brick arch & fireplace in our alfresco area, we also designed a wood fired pizza oven using similar tonal bricks and curves. In addition, we have used heritage windows at the front of the house, creating more street appeal, whilst in the new section of the house we have used aluminum windows & doors.

Sustainability also played a huge part in our design. We utilised a sustainable practice throughout the build by re-using many different materials that existed within the original worker’s cottage. These included re-using the original VJ panelling, windows, framing timber, stain glass windows, bricks etc. Additionally adding modern features such as motorised and fixed skylights, louvres, solar panels, rainwater tanks, eco-friendly appliances and the carbon neutral Sussex tapware used throughout demonstrates our commitment to building sustainable homes.

Our Coastal Cottage is a unique build that has a rich history and character like no other! It has a laid back yet luxurious feel and as described by many of our friends and family, walking into the home is like receiving a big warm hug! In the heart Burleigh Heads, our home is our slice of paradise.
